The inspirational big Broadway musical hit is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960's. Hairspray features loveable plus-size heroine, Tracy Turnblad, who has a passion for dancing and wins a spot on the local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show". Overnight, she finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity. But there's more to Tracy than just her dancing. When asked by Corny Collins, "And if you were President, what would your first official act be?" Tracy replies, "Well, I'd make every day on the show Negro Day". This would allow, for the first time, African American teens to dance everyday on the show--a scandalous act during the 1960's. Can a larger-than-life adolescent manage to integrate the television show, find true love, while singing and dancing and without mussing her "beehive" hair-do? Come see Hairspray and you'll see why this musical has captured the hearts of audiences across the country.
